A sessions court in Islamabad has handed a 25-year prison sentence to a Muslim man for murdering a Christian woman three years ago after she turned down his marriage proposal, according to a report.
The report stated that Islamabad Sessions Judge Azam Khan convicted Muhammad Shahzad alias Shani for the murder of 24-year-old Sonia Allah Rakha while acquitting three others nominated in the case.
Sonia was gunned down by Shani on November 30, 2020, when she was headed to work at a beauty salon. The murderer had fled the scene after the incident but was later arrested by police.
The victim had told her family about Shani’s overtures and they had also respectfully turned down his proposal when his mother came to their house. The refusal ostensibly angered Shani and he resorted to killing Sonia.
Sonia’s father Allah Rakha said the family was relieved with the verdict but the three-year-long pursuit for justice had taken a toll on them financially and emotionally.
